Scouts NSW has always had firm standards around smoking when on our properties and in the presence of other members. These standards are in line with NSW Government Policy.
What is covered under this policy?
This policy covers the smoking or consumption of any tobacco products such as cigarettes or roll your own tobacco products. Products associated with “vaping” are also covered under this policy.
Who can smoke or vape?
Products associated with Smoking or Vaping can only be in the possession of those over the age of 18. This policy applies to any person using a Scouting controlled property or any worker, employee, or contractor engaged by Scouts NSW (including all adults under WHS legislation).
Where can I smoke or vape?
Under our policy, all properties owned or controlled by Scouts NSW are “Smoke Free”. This means smoking or vaping cannot occur on these properties.
But I could smoke at XYZ event or when I visited XYZ site?
The policy does allow for when it is impractical to leave a site to smoke or vape due to the properties size that certain areas can be established for smoking and vaping. This process is controlled by the State Team and is the exception rather than the rule.
What other rules surround smoking or vaping?
Under our policy, no adult can smoke or vape when:
- In uniform and in view or the public and
- When in view of youth members and
- Where any youth members or member of the public cannot smell the smoke and
- When more than 5m from any Scouts NSW property boundary or on an off-site activity and
- When the smoke or residue from any smoking or vaping cannot enter a building.
When smoking or vaping, please be aware that being seen or smelt by members of the public can reflect badly on Scouts NSW.
